Diamonds Are Forever

( Cynthia Rowley dress c/o, Dolce Vita boots, Carolina Amato necklace)

This necklace was given to me by my awesome wedding client and I just love it. The designer is Carolina Amato. I just checked out Carolina's website and I'm so into her Summer scarves. Tres chic.

Speaking of Summer, has everyone properly recovered from this past weekend? I had so much fun! It involved more alcoholic beverages than I've had all year! If you can judge a Summer by Memorial Day weekend then I predict Summer 2012 is going to be the bomb.com!

Here ye, Here ye, we will be having a new contest coming up that I'm really excited about. I'll give you readers a styling assignment and then you upload your styled outfit to the blog's facebook page. I'll choose the winner and if you have a blog, brand or website I will put your shit on blast in addition to the prize which y'all know will be sweet. Who's down? Let's play.

Surfside Florals

(Cynthia Rowley leggings c/o, Botkier clutch, Alexis Bittar cuff - similar)

These neoprene leggings are LA essentials for when the temperature drops at night - probably pretty sweet in the city too or at the beach for when your legs have gotten too much sun. They're statement so I paired them with a gray men's T worn inside out, some sandals and a Buddha necklace. Just cuz.
Getting some of this mop cut off today. Nothing crazy but it's getting too heavy in this heat.

I Still Read The Sunday New York Times

( c/o Cynthia Rowley dress, gifted Botkier purse, Banana Republic sandals -old)

I've been looking for something special to wear to a June wedding in Montauk (I'm the planner). My good friends at Cynthia Rowley sent me a few pieces to test drive and I'm in love with this black Lattice dress. The fit is perfect and it's incredibly comfortable, though I may opt for something long for the nuptials.
Got to run - Mark is making cornmeal griddle cakes - Monday morning treat!

Lunch in Los Feliz

(Levis cut-offs, Adam blouse, Botkier clutch)
Business on top, party on the bottom.
Have a great weekend y'all.

Shoegasm: Swedish Hasbeens

Swedish Hasbeens
These puppies are on my must-have list for Summer. They are super comfortable, elongate the gams and so classic. I'll probably wear them for the next five years so they're worth the investment. Could also rock them come Fall with socks. Qu'est que vous dites "nerd chic"?

How To: Wear Florals

(gifted Rachel Pally Echo dress in Posey, Adam leather jacket, gifted Botkier Valentina bag, Gap studded belt)
"Ain't she sweet, see her walking down the street, ain't she nice, look her over once or twice."

This is a song my grandmother used to sing to me and it generally sums up how I feel when I wear a floral print. I feel sweet, I feel nice, I feel like I may be looked over once or twice. This makes me happy. But there is a fine line between feeling happy and sweet and feeling like a sacharine baby doll mess. A fine line indeed. So...

How To Wear Florals Without Looking Like An Extra From To Catch A Predator

Step One: Layer with strong "don't F with me" jacket. I'm wearing blush leather here. The color is girly but the fabric and cut suggest that this kitty may have claws. A motorcycle jacket and florals is always a win.

Step Two: Add a subtle dose of studs. Studded accessories are like martinis: best in moderation. This belt adds just the right amount of edge - not overkill.

Step Three: Don't forget your big girl shoes. I love my ballet flats with rolled jeans and a BF sweater but a neutral wedge is better for this look. You're a grown woman after all not a french schoolgirl.

Et Voila - A Summer look that's both naughty and nice.

Home On The Range

(Um, can someone send me some overalls please?)
Yesterday I felt like being a bum, staying in bed all day with the covers pulled up over my head. I couldn't totally bum-out-too much work- but I indulged myself by forgoing hair, make-up and put off showering till 8pm. A mackababy's gotta do what a mackababy's gotta do. I also took a long lunch with my husband at our favorite spot and a siesta. I think that somedays you need to baby yourself - stay in your sweatpants till noon and not care.

These photos of Angela Lindvall and her boys make me feel happy just looking at them. Raising a family on a farm in Topanga Canyon sounds so romantic. Enjoying the sunset everynight with a glass of wine, catching fireflies in a jar, grass between your toes and feeling a million miles away from smog town USA.

Orange, Olive and Avocado Salad by Taided Betancourt

This recipe comes from Brooklyn based chef and my go-to girl for good vibrations Taided Betancourt. We've had this salad at least five times since Taided showed me how to make it a few weeks ago. It's fresh and satisfying. I like to add a nice hunk of crusty bread for lunch or a light supper.

2 Navel Oranges
2 tablespoons shallot, finely diced
1 teaspoon orange zest
2 tablespoons red wine vinegar
2 tablespoons lemon juice
¼ cup extra virgin olive oil
1 avocado, ripe, but not too soft
about a dozen pitted green olives, I like to use picholine
1 medium handful arugula or frisee

Combine the shallot, vinegar, lemon juice, and 1/2 t salt. Let sit 5 minutes, then whisk in olive oil and zest. You will probably have some extra dressing.  It will keep in the fridge for about 4 days.

With a very sharp knife cut the skin and the pith (the white part) off the orange.  Then slice the orange into rounds and halve them.
Cut the avocado in half, remove the seed and scoop out he flesh with a spoon.  Slice the avocado into 1/4-1/2 inch slices.

Arrange the orange slices on the bottom of your serving plate.  Drizzle with a bit of the dressing.  Next, scatter the avocado slices on top of the oranges, sprinkle the avocado with salt & pepper and a little dressing.  Place the arugula or frisee in a small bowl, season with salt, pepper and dressing. Toss well and place in a mound in the center of the plate with the oranges and avocados.  Scatter the olives all around and serve.

Thanks for sharing Taided!

Inspiration -> Execution: Dining Nook

via Amber Interior Design
You may remember this photo I posted bout a year ago. It's a dining room designed by my blogger BFF Amber. I used this photo as a reference point when we designed our much smaller dining nook this year.

Here's our dining nook before.

Bor-ing! It's a lot different from Amber's in size and there's no big, beautiful window to use as a backdrop. I opted for the next best thing - a mirror. Probably could have used a bigger mirror but I had this vintage one from my mom and it's $$$ saving to re-purpose things you already own.

Here's our Dining Nook after.

I think the biggest, bestest change we made was switching out the standard light fixture and replacing it with one from West Elm. It's embarrassing how accomplished we felt after doing this. It was like the most awesome husband/wife team-building exercise ever.

We painted the walls a soft, inviting white. I like BEHR's White Truffle. On one wall we've started a frame collage (still a work in progress) and on the other wall I hung a vintage Charlie's Angels print that my friend Deirdre gave me when she moved.

The print came in a cheesy-too-big-for-the-photo frame which always kept me from loving it. I did Jaclyn Smith a solid and liberated that bitch! I took her out of said cheesy frame and hung her on the wall with two binder clips from Staples. I affixed the binder clips in the top corners and then hung them on wall with basic hardware store nails. Have I mentioned that I love The Home Depot?

I think it's important to have a table to share meals out no matter how small your space. Our little nook is excellent for entertaining, like when my Dad stopped by for dinner last week.

We also have a rustic bench with two sheepskins as cushions that we bring out from the bedroom for larger dinner parties. I'm still looking for a bright, ethnic print rug to finish the space like in Amber's original photo. This Jute one will do for now. It used to be in the living room before Mark's parents brought us an amazing Aztec inspired rug from Texas. It's all about re-purposing baby! Re-upholstering too but I digress.

Leave a comment if you like this post. My friend Helen asked me to do more features on making small spaces feel like home. And come back tomorrow to get the recipe for the Orange, Olive and Avocado salad we served to mi padre!
Happy Monday.
